Origin of the family name: The name Gaetano is derived from “Gaeta” which is a historical city located in the Italian province of Lazio, roughly 50 miles from Napoli. The Gaitano family name likely came to Sifnos from Italy through Italian immigration, possibly during periods of Venetian or other Italian influence on the island, which left lasting architectural and cultural marks.  ‘‘Gaitanaki’’ is also a Greek folk dance from the Thessaly and Epirus regions, with roots in both ancient Greek dance traditions and a later introduction by Greek refugees from Asia Minor. His performances of Liszts’ 1st Piano Concerto, Shostakovich’s 2nd Piano Concerto and Prokofiev’s 1st Piano Concerto were particularly notable. He left also as a heritage numerous books in musicology and literature era.

Her mother, Betty Barzouka - Gaitanou, an acclaimed pianist, known for her special focus on modern piano repertoire, Betty has contributed significantly to the promotion of contemporary Greek music. She has recorded for radio and television, premiered works by Greek composers, and collaborated with the Cyprus Radio Foundation. In addition to her performance career, Betty has spent over four decades teaching piano and mentoring young pianists, many of whom have achieved international recognition. She is the founder of Pianorizons, a piano ensemble dedicated to modern works and contemporary Greek composers.
